The Shoplifters

By Deborah Rankin

"Theft at its worst is greed, but at its best can symbolize an act of defiance against the system...We all have our own internal sense of justice that doesn't always match the legal one." – Morris Panych

The Shoplifters - Written and directed by the award-winning Canadian playwright Morris Panych The Shoplifters puts a humorous spin on the phrase "give and take" satirizing conventional mores and consumer culture along the way. This high-key comedy stars veteran Canadian actors Ellen David and Michel Perron while Laurent Pitre and Marie-Ève Perron round out the cast. The show is performed predominantly in English delightfully accented in French by Marie-Ève Perron evoking an authentic Montreal feeling. Ken MacDonald's realistic set, kitsch costumes, and everyday props make the entertainment all the more amusing. Panych's story rings true to life in this grocery-store episode about real people, their real-life dilemmas, and the all too real consequences their actions all too often engender.
