"I think Rockefeller just might be an artist, and that really frightens me." - Torquil Campbell
Truth and fiction sometimes get mixed up especially in the mind of a criminal impostor or someone - say a writer with a penchant for true-crime stories - who is completely obsessed with their subject. Such is the central conceit of true crime by Torquil Campbell in this twisted tale of murder and intrigue co-created with Crow's Theatre Artistic Director Chris Abraham in collaboration with Julian Brown. Campbell portrays himself and his doppelganger Clark Rockefeller a.k.a. Christian Gerhartsreiter currently serving near-life in a California prison in this Castleton Massive production. The true-life story was inspired by Patricia Highsmith's novels about con-artist extraordinaire, the talented Mr. Ripley. Campbell, who is better known as the front man for the Indie band, Stars, also performs a few tunes on stage which makes for enjoyable interludes in this crime drama. This is a complex layered story about art imitating life imitating art. Most of all, true crime shines a light on our preoccupation with the dark side of things making us question our own blurred motives.
