St.-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival

By Deborah Rankin

The 28th Edition of the St.-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival is in full swing. The theatre, dance, music, and comedy festival is the longest running showcase in Montreal for emerging artists in a variety of genres. The Fringe repertory includes off-Broadway shows, circus acts, art exhibits, film, bands and much more. There are 62 companies this year performing in multiple venues in the trendy Plateau area on or around "The Boulevard". The Saint Laurent commercial strip formerly known as The Main is famous for smoked meat at Schwartz's Delicatessen and a wide variety of culinary offerings. The Fringe is multilingual with performers from around the globe but most shows are in either English or French. In addition to events taking place at the main hub of the fest there are off-venues listed in the program. There's always a lot going at the beer tent at Parc des Ameriques located at the intersection of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Rachel Street. While the Fringe Festival is often associated with wacky comedy and nightclub improvisation there are also first rate dramas. The best way to find out what's going on at the Fringe is to check out its website and follow the buzz.
