Successions - Family Matters at the Centaur

by Deborah Rankin

Successions by Michaela Di Cesare is a play about an Italian family from Saint Leonard, an east-end borough in Montreal with a large Italian population. Two brothers have to sort out the details of the estate after their last surviving parent dies in this family comedy- drama directed by Tamara Brown. This is a play about sibling rivalry, the ties that bind, memories, meaning, money, status, in-laws, and family legacy. It could almost be a play about any family of any ethnic origin from anywhere, so universal is its theme of family matters. Successions is a thoughtful, funny, poignant, and at times intense exploration of why family matters. As Eda Holmes, Artistic and Executive Director of the Centaur Theatre writes, "It is no accident that the whole of western drama is built around the inherited family story." Di Cesare said that in writing this play she wanted to give a different voice to the Canadian immigrant experience. We all come from families, intact or fragmented, and from one or more cultural communities. Successions is one of many threads that weave together to form the cultural mosaic that is our shared Canadian story with its own distinctive Italian imprint.
